New Credit Industry Campaign:
“Help With My Credit”

Plus: How to Improve Your Credit Score

A group of leading credit issuers have launched a new campaign Help With My Credit (HWMC) to provide information and resources to assist and educate you who may be struggling with credit card payments.

The campaign includes a site http://www.helpwithmycredit.org
or a toll free number -- 866 941 1030.

The Help With My Credit Campaign:

If you call the HWMC toll free number, you will be transferred to a customer service representative for your card issuer or to a credit counselor if you are calling regarding several cards. The operators will not serve as a counselor or collect any personal data from you.

If you call HWMC and want to talk to directly with one of you credit card issuers, you will be instructed on how to look on the back of their credit card for their customer service number or referred to their billing statement for the number.

If you call and ask to speak to a credit counselor, you will be directed to www.HelpWithMyCredit.org where you will find two different help agencies available for your use:

  • National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC) and
  • Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies (AICCCA)

both of which offer listings of accredited credit counselors on their respective sites.

If you access the HWMC site you will be ask a series of questions. At the end of the questionnaire the site will provide information and contact information for resources such as credit counselors.

The Learning Center link provides information about credit cards to educate customers on how the system works.

The Resources link provides tools such as a Credit Card Payment Calculator and to other resources to help customers better manage their personal finances.

How to improve your Credit Score:

1. Make sure your Credit Report is accurate

or contact the following credit bureaus directly:

  • Experian Credit:      800-301-7195
  • Equifax Credit:        800-685-1111
  • Trans Union:           800-916-8800

To correct any incorrect information on your credit report, contact the credit bureau that provided you with your credit report.

2. Continue to Make Your Payments On Time

Making all of your payments on time will help to establish a good payment history.

3. Don’t Close Old, Paid Off Accounts

Old established accounts help to establish the length and history of a credit report.

Your pay history is about 35% of overall credit score and length of time of the account is about 15% of your overall credit score.

4. Stay In Touch with Creditors

Stay in touch with your creditors until your payment situation improves.

5. Consumer Credit Counseling (CCCS)

You may want to contact a local CCCS office that may work with your creditors to help improve your situation and to help avoid bankruptcy.
