How to Get Your Name Off
Unsolicited Credit Card Mailings

When you view your credit report, (visit: www.annualcreditreport.com) you may see any one of a number of a banks or financial institutions have made inquires about your credit without your knowledge.

Basically, these inquiries to your credit history won't affect your overall credit rating or credit score.

These credit inquires are the first step in a possible mailing to your home offering you a new line of credit. These offers are referred to as "pre-screened" or "pre-approved" credit offers. Thus, the bank or financial institution is credit your credit before they plan to mail you an offer to open a new line of credit with them.

Based on information within your credit report, they may determine that you meet their criteria for obtaining a new credit card, etc.

Many times, the bank involved may not have even review your individual credit report. It may have simply asked the credit reporting company for a list of individuals who meet their credit requirements.

Or they may have come up with their own list of potential card holders and then asked the credit reporting agency to screen the list for those who meet their credit requirements.

They will not affect your credit report or affect your credit score. But such unsolicited inquiries to your credit report will show up on your credit report.

Even though they will not affect your credit report or affect your credit score, these inquires may be a bother. Under federal law, you can put a stop to many of them -- you may "opt out" of these unsolicited inquiries to your credit report.

You may do this by contacting a clearinghouse that's run jointly by the major credit reporting bureaus.

Call the clearinghouse toll-free at 1-888-567-8688, or go to their site: www.optoutprescreen.com

You may choose to stop those unsolicited inquires either for five years or permanently. Your request will take effect within five days.
