to Repair Your Credit

by Robin Williams

Cleaning up your credit is extremely important to qualify for new credit and even new jobs. Having a good credit – clean credit report and a good credit score can fulfill your dream of buying a beautiful home, or getting a new credit card with advantageous terms and conditions for example a low interest rate, or getting your dream job. So, if you have debts and as a result you have bad credit, pay off debt in order to clean up your credit.

Pay off debt - Strategies:

1. Lower the usage of credit cards:

In order to keep the debt amount in control, lower the usage of your credit cards. If you can put a control on the debt amount, you will be able to pay off the debt easily enough. You may not even need to take the help of a third party to pay off the debts.

2. Continue making on-time payments:

Also continue making on-time payments on the existent credit cards and other debts so that your credit improves. If you are facing problems in making payments on your accounts, talk to the creditors to lower the interest rate or agree to repayment options.

3. Pay down delinquent debts:

Find out the accounts on which you have missed payments. Then talk to those creditors about making payments on these accounts. However, you should also check the Statute of Limitations (SOL) on these accounts. If the SOL on any of these debts has expired, you can file a dispute with the credit bureaus to remove the negative against this account from your credit report.

4. Request Pay for delete:

While making payments on delinquent accounts, also request the creditors to agree to “pay for delete” (PFD) agreement so that the negative gets removed in lieu of the payment. Not all creditors agree to this request but you should try. This helps in improving your credit.

5. Check your credit report:

After you pay off debt, you should check your credit reports too. This should be done to check whether or not the payments have been rightfully updated on your credit report otherwise your credit score will be hurt. Also, check if the negatives has been removed too if any particular creditor had agreed to PFD on an account.

In addition, get all kinds of agreements in writing so that you can dispute any wrong listing on your credit report.
